Srinagar: The Chief Engineer of the Jal Shakti Department Kashmir has issued a public advisory to prevent the freezing and bursting of water pipes amidst harsh winter conditions.
In a statement, he said that by adopting safety measures, freezing, bursting, or leakage of water pipes can be avoided, ensuring a safe and uninterrupted water supply during the winter months.
“Consumers have been advised to insulate exposed pipes in unheated areas, such as garages, basements, or crawlspaces, with insulation material. They should also disconnect and drain hoses connected to outdoor faucets to prevent freezing and bursting. Additionally, the public is urged to seal leaks or cracks around pipes and faucets to block cold air, keep cabinet doors under sinks open to allow warm air to circulate, and let a minimal flow of cold water drip from taps served by exposed pipes, as running water is less likely to freeze,” it reads.
The advisory also included monitoring water pressure and signs of freezing. Consumers are encouraged to check for significant decreases in water flow, which may indicate a frozen pipe, and inspect for signs of freezing such as frost, ice, or water stains on walls and ceilings.
In case of emergencies, the department instructed consumers to shut off valves immediately if pipes burst and to maintain a warm indoor temperature to prevent freezing. The Chief Engineer also emphasised the judicious use of water during winter.
For issues such as leaking or frozen pipes, water supply shortages, or requests for tanker services, consumers can contact the PHE Department’s toll-free helplines at 18001807027 or 0194-2452047. These measures aim to ensure uninterrupted water supply and minimise public inconvenience during the harsh winter.
