Srinagar: In view of Eid-ul-Adha, the Lakes Conservation and Management Authority (LC&MA) today appealed to the general public to avoid throwing or dumping hides and offal of sacrificial animals in Dal Lake and other water bodies.
In a statement issued here, the authorities at LC&MA informed that on the eve of Eid-ul-Adha it has been observed that people throw or dump the hides and offal of such animals in Dal, Nigeen, Brari Nambal and other water bodies, thereby causing absolute choking of navigation channels.
Dal Lake is our collective asset that needs to be conserved and the same cannot be achieved without the active support and participation of the general public. In past years our water bodies at several points witnessed massive blockage due to dumping of animal hides and their offal. In respect of Dal Lake, the JK LCMA was necessitated to undertake a massive drive to remove animal hides in the past.
Being a stakeholder of water bodies, it is obligatory for all to avoid dumping of animal hides and their internal organs into water bodies, failing which a strict action as warranted under law shall be taken against violators. Also heavy fines will be realized against the violations.
In a sequel, an awareness rally was carried out under the supervision of Project Officer, Watershed Management Ghazala Abdullah from STP Lam to Nishat.
The rally was attended by Assistant Professor SKUAST, Naseem Geelani and 38 students of the university. At the occasion, the general public was emphasized upon to take care of water bodies and avoid them from littering.
SMC To Kick Off Cleanliness Around Mosques, Shrines In Srinagar
As Eid-ul-Adha draws closer, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has decided to carry out cleanliness around all major mosques and shrines in the city. It also warned of strict action against those throwing hides and offal of sacrificial animals on the roadside.
A senior official at SMC said the civic body has directed all the concerned officials to carry out cleanliness around all major places of worship in Srinagar. He said the corporation has also made arrangements for the collection of hides and offal of sacrificial animals.
“Teams have been constituted for the collection of hides and offal of sacrificial animals. However, if anyone is found throwing them on the roadside or drains, will be dealt with as per municipal laws,” he said.
The places identified for the Eid prayers will be cleaned, and for that, all elaborate arrangements have been put in place, the official said.
Earlier, people used to donate the hides of sacrificial animals to mosques, local committees, religious seminaries, and orphanages. But owing to the decline in the market value of hides in the past few years, and with no buyers around, many people started throwing hides and offal on roadsides, causing inconvenience and clogging of drains in many city parts.
