Imphal: In an extremely horrifying incident two Kuki tribal were paraded naked and molested by a mob of men allegedly belonging to the Meitei group in Manipur.
A video from the incident that reportedly took place on May 4 in B Phainom village, Kangpokpi district, Manipur has gone viral and evoked angry responses from all over the world. Nobody from the ruling Bhartiya Janta Party spoke of the incident till a video from the incident went viral.
In the video, perpetrators can be seen forcibly parading the women, leading them into nearby fields where the horrifying ordeal unfolds. The women are subjected to constant molestation while they cry and plead with their captors.
PM Modi on Thursday condemned the incident only after the video, despite the FIR having been filed immediately after the incident.
According to the First Information Report (FIR) submitted in connection with the event, one of the victims reportedly suffered a terrible gang-rape during the ordeal.
The incident has been strongly criticised by the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF), who also expressed their amazement and dismay. The group emphasised the added brutality of the offenders uploading the footage on social media, which revealed the victims’ identities and heightened the misery of these helpless women.
As of now, charges of rape and murder, among others, have been pressed against “unknown miscreants” numbering “800-1,000,” as disclosed by the Saikul police station official.
Meanwhile, Supreme Court has asked the Centre and Manipur governments to apprise it what action they have taken to bring perpetrators to book.
“What is portrayed in the media about visuals which appeared shows gross constitutional violation and infraction of human life using women as instruments of perpetrated violence is against constitutional democracy. Let the Centre and state apprise the court on steps taken,” orders Supreme Court.
