Kabul: The death toll in powerful earthquakes that rocked Afghanistan’s Herat and other western provinces reached over than 2,000.
The earthquake struck about 40km (25 miles) north-west of Herat at around 11:00 local time (06:30 GMT) on Saturday.
Apart from Herat, affected provinces also include Badghis and Farah. Afghanistan’s National Disaster Management Authority said earlier that rescue teams have been sent to the affected areas, Xinhua news agency reported.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mojahid put the number killed at 2,053 people, with more 1,240 people hurt and 1,320 houses completely or partially destroyed. There are fears the toll could rise further.
