Srinagar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led union government has extended the ban on Yasin Malik’s outfit by declaring the ‘Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front’ as an “unlawful association” for a five-year duration with immediate effect under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
“The Modi government has declared the ‘Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (Mohd. Yasin Malik faction)’ as an ‘Unlawful Association’ for a further period of five years,” Amit Shah wrote on X.
In 2019, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had banned Yasin Malik’s outfit under the anti-terror legislation, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (UAPA). Prior to this action, the government had also banned Jamat-e-Islami (JeI-J&K) under Section 3(1) of the UAPA.
The JKLF was similarly banned under the provisions of the UAPA, empowering the Centre to declare any association as unlawful by officially notifying it in the Official Gazette.
