Srinagar experienced its first sub-zero night of the season on Wednesday as temperatures plunged to minus 0.7°C, marking the arrival of the harsh winter season in the Kashmir Valley.
The sudden drop in temperature follows a prolonged autumn spell, signaling the region’s transition into the cold winter months.
According to details available with Kashmir Newsville, several areas in the Valley recorded even colder conditions. Shopian registered a bone-chilling low of minus 3.9°C, making it one of the coldest places in Kashmir. Pahalgam, a favorite destination for tourists and trekkers, closely followed with temperatures dropping to minus 3.7°C.
Frost-covered mornings have begun to emerge, with icy patches appearing in various parts of the region. Residents are now preparing for the colder days ahead, relying on traditional heating methods like kangris (firepots) alongside electric devices.
The Meteorological Department has forecast a continuation of the cold wave, predicting below-normal temperatures in the coming days. Higher altitudes may also witness light snowfall, which could further bring down temperatures across the Valley.
Authorities have advised residents to take necessary precautions to safeguard their health during the freezing weather. Travelers have been cautioned against visiting frost-prone areas during early morning hours.
