Srinagar: Zee News and its anchor, Malhotra Malika, are facing backlash for spreading misinformation about a Kashmiri Muslim man seen offering namaz atop a vehicle on the Srinagar-Jammu Highway.
The news channel falsely claimed that the driver had deliberately stopped his truck, causing a traffic jam and inconveniencing hundreds of commuters.
However, the actual cause of the disruption was a landslide between Ramban and Banihal, which had already blocked the highway. The viral video was manipulated by Zee News to falsely accuse the driver of obstructing traffic for prayers.
The misinformation has sparked outrage across Jammu and Kashmir, with people condemning the channel and its anchor for what they call “hate-mongering journalism.” Activists have also denounced the report, accusing sections of the media of fueling communal tensions with misleading narratives.
Many are now demanding strict action against Zee News and Malhotra Malika, calling for an FIR to be filed against them for spreading communal hatred through fake news.
Social media users have also pointed out Zee News’ history of divisive misinformation, urging authorities to hold media outlets accountable for misleading reporting.
