Srinagar: In the aftermath of the deadly Pahalgam militant attack, CM Omar, other leaders have strongly urged authorities to exercise caution, expressing concern over reports of civilian homes being damaged during large-scale crackdowns launched after the incident.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stressed the need for a firm and focused response to terrorism while warning against actions that could alienate the civilian population.
“After the Pahalgam terror attack, there must be a decisive fight against terrorism and its origin. The people of Kashmir have come out openly against terrorism and the murder of innocent people, doing so freely and spontaneously. It’s time to build on this support and avoid any misplaced action that alienates people. Punish the guilty, show them no mercy, but don’t let innocent people become collateral damage,” Omar Abdullah wrote on X.
Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti raised alarms over mass arrests and widespread reports of civilian homes being damaged.
“The Government of India must tread with caution and carefully distinguish between terrorists and civilians following the recent Pahalgam attack. It must not alienate innocent people, especially those opposing terror. There are reports of thousands being arrested and scores of homes of common Kashmiris being damaged along with those of militants. I appeal to the Government to direct the authorities to ensure that innocent people do not feel the brunt, as alienation aids the terrorists’ goals of division and fear,” she posted on X.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also expressed distress over the situation, urging authorities not to inflict suffering on innocent families.
“While Kashmiris collectively condemn the heinous crime at Pahalgam and it is imperative to bring its perpetrators to justice, indiscriminate arrests and videos circulating on social media showing the damage to homes and neighborhoods are disturbing and distressing. I urge the authorities that in seeking justice for the innocent victims, innocent Kashmiri families must not be punished,” Mirwaiz appealed.
Member of Parliament Ruhullah Mehdi wrote, “Kashmir and Kashmiris are being given a collective punishment,” underlining the growing incidents of razing houses to ground.
