Riyadh: Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh, the Grand Mufti and Head of the Council of Senior Scholars of Saudi Arabia, passed away at the age of 82. He died in Riyadh on Tuesday morning, Saudi Gazette reported.

Sheikh Al-Sheikh was a world-renowned Islamic scholar who, besides serving as Grand Mufti, also headed the General Presidency of Scholarly Research and Ifta, as well as the Supreme Council of the Muslim World League.

The funeral prayer will be held at the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh after the Asr prayer on Tuesday.

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman, has ordered that funeral prayers in absentia be performed at the Grand Mosque in Makkah, the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, and in all mosques across the Kingdom.

The King, along with Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, has offered condolences to his family, the Saudi people, and the Islamic world.

In June 1999, King Fahd appointed Al-Sheikh as Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, succeeding Sheikh Abdul Aziz Ibn Baz.
