Srinagar: The Meteorological Centre Srinagar has forecast a week-long spell of rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds across Jammu and Kashmir, while warning of flash floods and mudslides in vulnerable areas due to brief intense showers.
Even as temperatures remained above normal across much of the Union Territory, the weather department advised people to remain cautious amid the likelihood of lightning, hailstorms, strong winds and intermittent rainfall through June 19.
According to the forecast issued on Friday, weather conditions are expected to remain partly to generally cloudy with one or two spells of light to moderate rain and brief intense showers at many places.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 60 kmph at isolated locations, are also likely.
The department said similar weather conditions are expected to continue from June 13 to June 17, with scattered places likely to receive light rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds. The wet spell is expected to persist on June 18 and 19 as well.
The Meteorological Centre warned that brief but intense showers at isolated locations in both Kashmir and Jammu divisions could trigger flash floods and mudslides, particularly in vulnerable areas.
People have been advised to stay away from loose structures, electric poles, overhead wires and old trees during periods of adverse weather. The department also recommended suspension of boating and Shikara operations whenever weather conditions deteriorate.
