Srinagar: The Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Department, Kashmir, on Monday issued a public advisory warning of a strong spell of rainfall across the Jhelum Basin on July 21, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy precipitation that could trigger flash floods and cause a sharp rise in water levels, particularly in South Kashmir.
According to the advisory, rainfall between 50 mm and 100 mm is expected during the morning of July 21, mainly affecting the districts of Anantnag, Kulgam and Shopian. A second spell of comparatively lighter rainfall is forecast for the morning of July 22.
The department cautioned that the expected weather conditions could lead to flash floods and a sudden increase in water levels in channels, khuls, nallahs and other watercourses, especially in the upper reaches and hilly areas of South Kashmir.
It further warned that increased inflows are likely to raise water levels in the major tributaries and the River Jhelum, prompting authorities to urge the public to remain vigilant.
The I&FC Department advised residents, particularly those in South Kashmir, to stay away from rivers, nallahs, khuls, water channels and other flood prone areas, especially in upper reaches and hilly regions.
People have also been urged to avoid unnecessary travel to vulnerable locations. Residents of low lying areas have been asked to remain alert, take all necessary precautions and closely follow official weather and flood advisories issued by the authorities.
