Srinagar: J&K National Conference and Indian National Congress’s alliance on Tuesday won the J&K Assembly Elections after securing 48 seats among a total of 90 constituencies.
The Election Commission of India said that the JKNC has bagged 42 seats and its alliance partner Congress managed just six seats, taking the total seats won by the two parties to 48, which comfortably surpassed the majority mark of 46 seats.
Although the BJP could not emerge the winner but was able to win 29 seats, which outshined the Congress’s meagre six seats and PDP’s three.
The parties which won one seat each included the J&K People’s Conference in Handwara, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Kulgam and the Aam Aadmi Party in Doda. Seven seats were bagged by independent candidates — Langate by Khursheed Ahmad Shiekh, Shopian by Shabir Ahmad Kulley, Inderwal by Payare Lal Sharma, Bani by Dr Rameshwar Singh, Chhamb by Satish Sharma, Thannamandi (ST) by Muzaffar Iqbal Khan and Surankote (ST) by Choudhary Mohammed Akram.
The 42 Assembly Constituencies won by NC included Lal Chowk (Ahsan Pardeshi), Hazratbal (Salman Ali Sagar), Khanyar (Ali Muhammad Sagar), Habba Kadal (Shameema Firdous), Chanapora (Mushtaq Guroo), Zadibal (Tanvir Sadiq), Eidgah (Mubarak Gul), Budgam (Omar Abdullah), Beerwah (Dr Shafi Wani), Khansahib (Saifuddin Bhat), Charar-e-Sharif (Abdul Rahim Rather), Chadoora (Ali Muhammad Dar), Ganderbal (Omar Abdullah), Kangan (Mian Mehar Ali), Baramulla (Javaid Hasan Beigh), Sopore (Irshad Rasool Kar), Rafiabad (Javaid Dar), Uri (Dr Sajad Shafi), Gulmarg (Farooq Shah), Pattan (Javaid Reyaz Bedar), Sonawari (Hilal Akbar Lone), Gurez (Nazir Gurezi), Thregam (Saifullah Mir), Karnah (Javaid Mirchal), Lolab (Qaisar Jamshid Lone), Kokarnag (Zafar Ali Khatana), Sri Gufwara-Bijbehara (Bashir Veeri), Shangus Anantnag East (Reyaz Khan), Pahalgam (Altaf Wani Kaloo), DH Pora (Sakina Itoo), Devsar (Pirzada Feroz), Anantnag West (Abdul Majeed Larmi), Pampore (Hasnain Masoodi), Rajpora (Mohiuddin Mir), Zainapora (Showkat Hussain Ganaie), Ramban (Arjun Singh Raju), Banihal (Sajad Shaheen), Gulabgarh (Khurshid Ahmed), Nowshera (Surinder Kumar Choudary), Budhal (Javaid Iqbal), Poonch Haveli (Ajaz Jan), Mendhar (Javaid Rana).
BJP, which was the second-largest party in terms of winning seats, secured 29 constituencies — Jammu North (Sham Lal Sharma), Jammu East (Yudvir Sethi), Jammu West (Arvind Gupta), Jammu South RS Pora (Dr Narinder Singh Raina), Bishna (Rajiv Kumar), Suchetgarh (Gharu Ram Bhagat), Bahu (Vikram Randhwa), Nagrota (Davinder Rana), Marh (Surinder Kumar Bhagat), Akhnoor (Mohan Lal Bhagat), Samba (Surjit Singh Slathia), Vijaypur (Chander Prakash), Ramgarh (Dr Davinder Kumar Manyal), Kishtwar (Shagun Parihar), Paddar Nagaseni (Sunil Kumar Sharma), Doda West (Shakti Raj Parihar), Badharwah (Daleep Singh Parihar), Reasi (Kuldeep Raj Dubey), Vishno Devi (Baldev Raj Sharma), Uhdampur West (Pawan Kumar Gupta), Udhampur East (RS Pathania), Chenani (Balwant Singh Mankotia), Ramnagar (Sunil Bharadwaj), Kathua (Dr Bharat Bhushan), Billawar (Satish Kumar Sharma), Basohli (Darshan Kumar), Jasrota (Rajiv Jasrota), Hiranagar (Vijay Kumar) and Kalakote-Sunderbani (Randhir Singh)
The six seats won by INC included Central Shalteng (Tariq Hameed Karra), Wagoora-Kreeri (Irfan Hafiz Lone), Bandipora (Nizamuddin Bhat), Anantnag (Pirzada Muhammad Sayed), Dooru (Ghulam Ahmad Mir) and Rajouri-ST (Iftkar Ahmed).
Kupwara, Pulwama and Tral were secured by PDP’s Fayaz Mir, Wahid Parra and Rafiq Naik, respectively.
Assembly Elections were held in three phases i.e. on 18th September, 25th September and 1st October in which satisfying voter turnouts were recorded.
The counting of votes began at 8 am at 28 counting centres for the 90 seats of Jammu and Kashmir assembly which went to polls in three phases. (CNS)
