Srinagar: A potentially tragic incident was averted in Srinagar’s Zabarwan hills on Sunday when police rescued two local trekkers during an active security operation.
The trekkers, identified as Tariq Ahmad Mir and Mufti Ziyan—both employees at a reputable missionary school in Srinagar—unintentionally became involved in the operation when security forces were investigating reports of suspicious activity involving individuals carrying bags and sticks.
The area was cordoned off, and warning shots were fired when no response was received. However, one of the trekkers managed to contact the police by dialing 100, which prompted immediate action from the police control room. Senior officers, including SSP Srinagar, quickly intervened and suspended the ongoing operation to ensure the trekkers’ safety.
The duo was found hiding behind rocks and was escorted to a nearby police station for questioning. Following verification of their identities, they were released and reunited with their families. The police have advised trekkers to notify local police stations before setting out in areas where security operations may be conducted to avoid similar incidents.(KNT)
