Rs 5 Lakh Subsidy Reserved Only For 15 Yr Old Buses: RTO Kashmir

Representational Image

Srinagar: The Government of Jammu and Kashmir has introduced the “Jammu & Kashmir Transport Subsidy Scheme” aimed at promoting eco-friendly and fuel-efficient public transport.

The initiative seeks to replace aging public transport vehicles, such as buses, mini-buses, and matadors, with newer models to tackle issues like pollution, traffic congestion, and road space management.

According to a government order, a copy of which lies with Kashmir Newsville, the scheme offers significant financial support to vehicle owners. For buses aged 15 years or more, a subsidy of ₹5 lakh will be provided for replacements. For other public transport vehicles in the same age category, the subsidy will cover 16% of the vehicle’s cost or ₹5 lakh, whichever is lower.

Eligibility Crteria

The scheme is available to owners of public transport vehicles aged 15 years or older. To qualify, vehicle owners must:

Clear all government dues, including token tax, passenger tax, fitness fees, and permit fees.

Settle any outstanding bank liabilities.

Possess valid permits and insurance.

Scrap old vehicles and submit proof of de-registration along with chassis cut pieces.

Additionally, subsidized vehicles cannot be transferred for five years and must operate on identified routes.

Application Process

Submit a plain paper application to the respective Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Jammu or Kashmir.

Attach updated vehicle documents and a certificate from a registered scrap dealer.

Once the application is approved and the loan sanctioned, owners will have three months to purchase the new vehicle. The subsidy amount will be directly transferred to the bank account linked to the loan.

This initiative underscores the J&K Government’s commitment to modernizing public transport and addressing environmental concerns.
