Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday clarified that the fashion show held in Gulmarg was a private event with no involvement from the government.
Speaking on the floor of the House, Abdullah criticized the organizers, saying those who hosted it “did not apply their brains.”
He said that the administration had not granted permission for the show.
“Some people say the event should not have been organized in the holy month of Ramadan, but I say it should not have been organized in any month,” he asserted.
The chief minister said he wants to make it clear that there is no role of the government in organising the event.
He also said if permission would have been sought from the government, it would not have given the permission for such an event. “If law has been violated, strict action will be taken.”
Jammu Kashmir’s Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, has ordered an inquiry into the incident. Abdullah’s office acknowledged the public’s “shock and anger,” stating that it was “totally understandable” given the timing of the event. He emphasized that the images showed “complete disregard for local sensitivities” and said he had instructed local authorities to submit a report within 24 hours for further action.
The Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA), the official body responsible for granting permission for events in the area, is now under scrutiny.
In response to the backlash, Elle India deleted the controversial reel from its Instagram account. The video was not available on its YouTube or Facebook pages either.
Before the removal, Elle India had referred to the event as an “audacious” fashion display that aimed to push boundaries, with the brand describing it as “bikinis and capes amidst some winter magic in the frozen alleys of Gulmarg.”
Following criticism, Shivan & Narresh posted a statement of apology on their official X page.
“We deeply regret any hurt caused by our recent presentation in Gulmarg during the holy month of Ramadan. Our sole intention was to celebrate creativity and the ski & apres-ski lifestyle, without any desire to offend anyone or any religious sentiments.
“Respect for all cultures and traditions is at our heart, and we acknowledge the concerns raised. We sincerely apologise for any unintended discomfort and appreciate the feedback from our community. We remain committed to being more mindful and respectful,” they said in the statement.
