Srinagar: The Meteorological Centre Srinagar has issued a detailed weather forecast for Jammu and Kashmir, predicting a prolonged spell of hot and dry conditions across the Union Territory from May 23 to May 31.
While isolated spells of light rain are expected during afternoons at a few locations, the overall weather pattern will remain dry and significantly warmer than usual.
According to the MeT department, the first phase of the forecast period, from May 23 to May 26, will see a sharp rise in daytime temperatures across both the Kashmir Valley and Jammu Division. In the Kashmir Valley, maximum temperatures are projected to increase by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius, potentially resulting in heatwave-like conditions in some areas. Jammu is expected to experience an even more pronounced rise of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius, with isolated regions likely to face full-fledged heatwave conditions.
The second phase of the forecast, from May 27 to May 31, is expected to bring continued hot and dry weather, although scattered light rain or thundershowers could provide intermittent relief in some areas. In the Kashmir region, a slight dip of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in temperatures is anticipated after May 23, which may offer some respite from the heat.
The MeT office has also issued a temperature advisory, urging the public—particularly vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those working outdoors—to take precautions against heat-related illnesses.
People are advised to stay hydrated, wear protective clothing, and avoid direct exposure to the sun during peak afternoon hours.
