Srinagar: In an unprecedented weather event, Srinagar has recorded its highest-ever minimum temperature for the month of June. The city logged a minimum temperature of 25.0°C, a figure never seen before in recorded history for this time of year, according to Kashmir Weather.
To put it into perspective, such temperatures are typically observed as daytime highs in late May, making this early morning heatwave all the more striking. The current average daytime temperature in Srinagar now stands at 29.2°C.
With the city waking up to temperatures once reserved for the peak of summer, residents are facing scorching conditions from the very start of the day.
Environmental experts say the rising minimum temperatures — often a clearer indicator of climate stress than daytime highs — are a red flag for the Valley’s fragile ecology. Prolonged heat spells, they warn, may have long-term implications for Kashmir’s glaciers, agriculture, and water availability.
With June on track to become one of the hottest ever recorded in Srinagar, residents now look skyward, hoping the forecast rains will finally arrive, and with them, a break from the heat.
