Srinagar: The Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU) — the largest conglomerate of religious organisations in Jammu & Kashmir, headed by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq — has expressed serious concern over reports of rotten, unhygienic, and allegedly non-halal meat being supplied to markets, street vendors, restaurants, and hotels in the Valley.
The MMU said such incidents not only pose a grave risk to public health but also violate the religious obligation of ensuring halal compliance in a Muslim-majority region.
The body reminded that it already has a Halal Certification Committee which certifies meat and related products in accordance with Islamic guidelines. It urged all traders, hotels, and restaurants to procure only from certified and verified sources.
Calling for immediate intervention, the MMU urged the authorities to take strict action against those involved, conduct transparent investigations, and implement regular monitoring of slaughterhouses, cold storage facilities, and supply chains to ensure both hygiene and halal standards. The organisation also appealed to the public to remain vigilant and prefer trusted, certified sources until confidence is restored.
