Budgam: A major breach in the River Jhelum bund near Zoonipora village early Thursday inundated several adjoining areas of Budgam district.
Officials said floodwaters entered Shalina, Rakh Shalina and Baghi Shakirshah villages, forcing overnight evacuation of residents to safer locations and designated rescue centres.
Authorities warned that Seerbagh and Summerbugh villages remain under threat of inundation. Rescue teams are shifting families from these areas to higher ground as a precaution.
The district administration has set up six relief centres for the displaced population at Government High School Wagoora, Government Higher Secondary School Khandah, Sheikh-ul-Alam High School Wagoora, Government Higher Secondary School BK Pora, Islamic Public High School Kralpora and Dar-ul-Fatah Dangerpora.
Officials said the entire administrative machinery is engaged in round-the-clock relief and rescue operations with teams from SDRF, NDRF, Police and Revenue Department deployed on the ground.
The administration urged residents to stay alert but not panic, assuring that all possible steps are being taken to safeguard lives and property.(KNT)
