Srinagar: India announced plans to reopen its embassy in Kabul, more than four years after closing it following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan.

Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said the move reflects India’s commitment to fostering closer cooperation with Afghanistan on trade, humanitarian aid, and regional stability.

The announcement coincides with the first visit to India by Afghan Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi since the Taliban assumed power in 2021. During the visit, Jaishankar emphasised India’s commitment to Afghanistan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national development, noting that the reopening of the embassy upgrades the existing technical mission in Kabu

Although India has historically maintained friendly relations with Afghanistan, it does not formally recognise the Taliban administration.

Western diplomats have cited concerns over the Taliban’s restrictions on women and human rights as key reasons for delayed recognition. Despite this, India continues to engage diplomatically to facilitate humanitarian support and economic cooperation.

The embassy reopening is expected to strengthen dialogue on political, economic, and trade issues, while also providing a channel for India to monitor developments in Afghanistan closely.

Analysts suggest the move reflects India’s strategic interest in maintaining influence in Afghanistan amid growing regional competition and security challenges.

The decision also highlights the Taliban’s efforts to expand engagement with regional powers in search of economic partnerships and eventual diplomatic legitimacy. Temporary exemptions by the UN Security Council allowed Muttaqi to travel to India, underscoring the delicate balance of international diplomacy surrounding Afghanistan.

Observers note that the development represents a cautious but significant step toward enhanced cooperation, signalling a potential thaw in India-Afghanistan relations despite lingering uncertainties over formal recognition.
