Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir Directorate of Geology and Mining has made GPS installation compulsory in all vehicles used for mineral extraction and transportation in the Union Territory. The move follows guidelines from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change for tighter, technology driven monitoring of sand and minor mineral movement.
The order states that no mineral will move without a GPS enabled vehicle registered with the Directorate. Every vehicle must carry a valid RFID number and a QR coded challan generated through the department portal.
The government says the system will improve end use accountability, stop illegal extraction, and prevent unauthorised transport. The order also refers to earlier National Highways Authority of India directions that require tracking devices in mineral carrying vehicles.
The directive includes QR coding, RFID tagging, ANPR cameras on gantries, and integrated e check gates for continuous monitoring.
Officials say the measures will tighten regulation of mining activity and keep Jammu and Kashmir aligned with national enforcement standards. They added that the focus is on reducing illegal mining and improving accountability.
