₹4.95 Crore Mehjoor Nagar Bridge Hit By Theft, Finials Stolen, Safety Concerns Raised

Srinagar: A recently constructed pedestrian footbridge in the Mehjoor Nagar area of Srinagar has come under scrutiny after reports of theft, vandalism, and safety concerns, including missing metal components and tampering with electrical infrastructure.

The footbridge, built at a reported cost of ₹4.95 crore by the Lakes and Rivers Waterways Development (LRWD) under the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), has seen the disappearance of several decorative metal spheres installed atop its railings. Visual evidence from the site shows multiple railing posts left exposed, with their spherical finials missing.

Locals told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that at least 32 such metal spheres were stolen during the night, pointing to a pattern of organised theft rather than isolated damage.

The incident has also raised concerns over safety after an electrical unit installed near the bridge, meant for lighting, is open and unsecured.

In addition, a nearby electric pole shows signs of tampering, with loose nuts and partially removed bolts, suggesting an attempted theft or interference that could compromise structural stability.

The developments highlight broader concerns around maintenance, monitoring, and protection of newly created public infrastructure in the city.

Local residents expressed shock over the damage, stating that the removal of metal components has not only disfigured the aesthetic appeal of the bridge but also reflects poorly on public responsibility. Some residents suspected the involvement of drug addicts, though no official confirmation has been made.

“There is visible damage to public property, and people are worried about safety as well,” a local inhabitant said, pointing to the open electrical installations and tampered fittings.

Locals have also questioned the absence of surveillance measures at the site, particularly in light of the project’s cost. Concerns were raised over the lack of CCTV cameras or monitoring systems that could deter such incidents or help identify those responsible.

An appeal has been made by locals to scrap dealers and metal buyers to alert police if such stolen items are brought for sale, warning that those involved in purchasing or facilitating sale of public property could face legal consequences.

The incident has also triggered broader reflection among locals about civic responsibility, with many describing the situation as a “serious lapse” and expressing concern over vandalism of public infrastructure.

There are also apprehensions that other components, including the bridge’s electrical or lighting system, could be targeted next if preventive measures are not taken promptly.

The Mehjoor Nagar footbridge was inaugurated after its foundation stone was laid on August 25, 2022, in the presence of senior municipal officials and local representatives.
