Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir government has approved an 18 per cent hike in fares for various categories of commercial passenger vehicles across the Union Territory, according to an official notification.
The notification, issued by the Transport Department from the Civil Secretariat, directs the Transport Commissioner to fix the revised maximum chargeable fares for different types of vehicles under provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
The fare revision applies to big buses (stage carriages), medium and mini buses, taxis and maxi cabs, including contract carriage vehicles such as Sumo, Bolero, Tavera, Scorpio and Innova, among others, officials said.
Auto-rickshaws (petrol version) and stage carriage vehicles like Tata Magic have also been brought under the 18 per cent fare hike, they said.
The government said the revised fares will be applicable over and above the rates notified earlier under SRO-97 dated March 19, 2021.
In addition, the administration has fixed rates for electric transport modes, with e-rickshaws to charge ₹15 per kilometre and e-autos ₹25 for the first kilometre and ₹20 for each subsequent kilometre, the notification said.
The order was issued by the Transport Department through Secretary Dr Piyush Singla as part of a broader revision of transport tariffs in the Union Territory.
The move is expected to impact daily commuters across both urban and rural areas, officials added.
