Ramban: A 22-year-old youth from Ramban, who had gone missing 20 days ago after allegedly jumping into a stream while fleeing suspected ‘cow vigilantes’, was found dead on Saturday, officials said.

An official said that the body was recovered from Nallah Bishlari near Kraalna Digdool in Ramban district.

He said the youth had gone missing on April 12 near Makarkoot along the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway while travelling from Jammu to his native village, when he was allegedly intercepted and assaulted. He subsequently jumped into the stream and remained untraced.

“Today, the body was spotted in the stream near Digdool and retrieved by rescue teams,” an official said, adding that the body, in a decomposed condition, has been shifted to a hospital for medico-legal formalities.

The deceased was identified as Tanveer Ahmad Chopan (22), son of Abdul Salam Chopan of Mundkhal Pogal.

Police have registered a case under FIR No. 26/2026 at Ramsoo Police Station and arrested four persons in connection with the incident. The accused have been identified as Surjeet Singh, Sandeep Singh, Digvijay Singh and Keval Singh.

SSP Ramban Arun Gupta has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by SDPO Banihal Surinder Singh Biloria to probe the case.

The family has alleged that the chase and assault led to his death and has demanded a fair probe and strict action against those involved.—(KNO)
