Srinagar: The 2026 Assembly election results delivered a decisive mandate across key states, with the BJP scripting a major breakthrough in West Bengal, retaining Assam with a landslide, while the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) secured a clear victory in Kerala. In Tamil Nadu, debutant TVK emerged as a significant player, unsettling the state’s traditional Dravidian political landscape.
Tamil Nadu Assembly Election Results 2026 signal a major political shift in a state long dominated by Dravidian parties. Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has emerged as the single largest party with 107 seats and is likely to seek allies to form the government.
The ruling DMK, led by Chief Minister MK Stalin, has suffered a significant setback, winning 59 seats and leading in one more. Stalin also lost his Kolathur constituency to a TVK candidate. The AIADMK secured 47 seats, while the Congress managed five.
In West Bengal, the BJP swept aside the incumbent Trinamool Congress government, winning 130 seats and leading in 76 more at the time of reporting. The Mamata Banerjee-led party lagged behind with 49 wins and leads in 30 seats. The Congress, which had failed to open its account in the previous Assembly polls, secured two seats.
The ruling NDA is set to form the government in Assam for the third time in a row after securing a two-thirds majority, with the alliance winning 101 seats in the 126-member assembly on Monday.
While the BJP won 81 seats till 8.30 pm, its allies — the Bodo Peoples’ Front (BPF) and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) — bagged 10 constituencies each. The BJP was leading in one seat.
In Kerala, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) secured a clear majority, winning over 90 seats in the 140-member Assembly, comfortably above the halfway mark of 71. The Congress itself won 63 seats, while key ally IUML added 22, anchoring the alliance’s return to power after a decade. Congress-led UDF in Kerala is a coalition of several centrist and centre-right parties, primarily including the Indian National Congress (INC), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), and various Kerala Congress factions. The UDF acts as the main opposition alliance to the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala
The scale of the win put the UDF far ahead of the Left Democratic Front led by Pinarayi Vijayan, with the CPI(M) restricted to 26 seats and its allies trailing behind. The margin, roughly 20 seats above majority and over 40 seats ahead of the principal rival, marks one of the Congress alliance’s strongest recent performances.
