Srinagar: A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck the Afghanistan–Tajikistan border region on Friday evening, with tremors felt across parts of Jammu and Kashmir, causing brief panic among residents.
According to initial data from the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, the earthquake occurred at 16:12:58 UTC. The epicentre was located at 36.52°N latitude and 71.01°E longitude, at a depth of 175 kilometres.
Strong tremors were reported in several areas of Jammu and Kashmir, prompting people to rush out of their homes as a precaution.
Despite the intensity of the tremors, there were no immediate reports of any damage to property or loss of life in the region. Authorities continue to monitor the situation.
The incident once again underscores the seismic vulnerability of the region, as Jammu and Kashmir falls within a high-risk earthquake zone.
