Srinagar: A fashion event in Gulmarg featuring ‘models in revealing attire’ on snow-covered terrain has sparked widespread outrage, with many activists, social and political leaders slamming it as disrespectful to religious and cultural values, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan.

The event, organized by the luxury brand ‘Shivan and Narresh’ to celebrate its 15th anniversary on March 7, featured models in scant clothing and the serving of alcohol, all set against the snow-covered backdrop of the Gulmarg ski resort..

However, the show has drawn severe criticism, particularly on social media, where many have expressed anger over what they call an affront to ethical and religious sensitivities.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah sought a report from administration amid “outrage” over “obscene fashion show” in picturesque Gulmarg.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the CM’s Office stated: “The shock and anger are totally understandable. The images I have seen show a complete disregard for local sensitivities, especially during this holy month. My office has been in touch with the local authorities, and I have asked for a report to be submitted within the next 24 hours. Further action, as appropriate, will follow from this report.”

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had earlier taken to X, calling the event “outrageous” and questioning how such an act could be tolerated in Kashmir’s deeply rooted Sufi and saint tradition. He stated: “Such obscenity in the name of tourism promotion will not be tolerated in Kashmir,” demanding immediate accountability from those responsible.

Member Parliament and senior National Conference leader Aga Ruhullah wrote on X: “The images from Gulmarg are shocking. This is what cultural invasion in the disguise of tourism looks like. They show an utter disregard for Kashmiri sentiments. The Tourism department officials involved should be immediately taken to task, as well as the organisers Shivan & Narresh.”

The viral images and videos from the event have ignited widespread public criticism, with many questioning the rationale behind holding such an event during the holy month of Ramadan.
