Srinagar: Indian origin nurse who was convicted of murdering a Yemeni citizen, is scheduled to be executed in Yemen on July 16, as per an Indian Express report.

Nimisha Priya, 37, a Kerala resident, was convicted of the murder of Yemeni citizen Talal Abdo Mehdi. Priya had partnered with Talal to open a clinic, which was a legal requirement for foreign nationals in Yemen. She allegedly sedated Talal to get her passport. However, the Yemeni citizen died from an overdose of the drugs. Priya and another Yemeni national, Hanan, her colleague, then allegedly dismembered and disposed of Talal’s body in a water tank. Later, authorities found her convicted and announced the verdict.

As per News18 report, Human rights activist Samuel Jerome Baskaran, who has been actively involved in outreach to Yemeni authorities and the victim’s family, said, “The public prosecutor has issued the execution order to prison authorities. The execution will take place on July 16,”adding that the Indian government can still step in to help save her life.

In June 2024, the Indian government approved a transfer of $40,000 to begin negotiations with Talal Abdo Mahdi’s family. However, on Monday, the President of Yemen approved the execution, setting the date for July 16. Earlier this year, the Yemeni embassy had said the case had largely been handled by the Houthi militia.

However, the Indian Government is in regular contact with the local authorities and Priya’s family members. “The government has been in regular touch with Yemen based authorities and her family members are provided possible assistance.”
