Srinagar: The death of a young woman in the Safapora area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district has sparked massive protests after locals alleged she was raped and murdered.

According to residents, the woman was found dead at her in-laws’ residence. “We assembled immediately when we heard something had happened. We rushed to her in-laws’ and found her dead. The post-mortem revealed it was not a natural death but a murder,” one local said.

Protesters raised slogans of “Kaatiloon Ko Phansi Do” as demonstrations intensified in the area. Police personnel later reached the spot to contain the situation.

“We came to offer condolences after hearing it was an accident, but later learnt it was murder. Many are saying it was rape. This is the first such incident in our locality,” said an agitated protestor.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Ganderbal, Khalil Poswal, confirmed that the case is being treated as murder. “All necessary samples have been collected and we are awaiting reports. There will be no bail. Anyone found helping the accused will be booked. This is not about me, it is about justice,” he said.

He added that, as of now, police have not officially named any suspect.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the area, with many residents calling it a deeply disturbing episode.(JKNS)
